A used pram can be a sensible buy, but you can't see what you're getting from a photo. This guide is the list we use ourselves. Every buggy we sell goes through the same 11 checks, and each one is photographed and signed off. If you're buying from anyone else, ask for the same things.
Check the labels first
- BS EN 1888 label. This is the UK pushchair safety standard label. It should be there and easy to read. If it has worn off, ask the seller why.
- Fire safety label. The fabrics should carry their flammability label.
Check the frame and fold
- Fold locks. The frame should lock open on both sides and stay locked when you lean on it.
- Harness. Test every buckle, release and adjuster. Look for fraying at the straps and anchor points.
- Frame. Run your eye and hand along the chassis. You're looking for cracks, bends and corrosion.
Check the brakes and wheels
- Brakes forward and backward. The brake should hold when you push the pram forwards and when you pull it backwards. On a slope is better still.
- Wheels. They should spin true, with no wobble, cracks or flat spots, and they should lock and swivel properly.
Check for little fingers
- Finger traps. Fold and unfold it, and move every adjuster. Hinges and folding points shouldn't pinch.
- Sharp edges. Feel for sharp or broken plastic and exposed metal anywhere a hand can reach.
Check for recalls
Find the model name and serial number, then look the model up against manufacturer and UK recall notices before you pay. Don't skip this because the pram looks fine.
Ask about returns and cover
Ask what happens if it isn't as described. Every buggy we sell comes with a 6-month warranty on top of your legal rights, and 14 days to decide. A private seller may not offer either, so ask before you pay.
