Expecting parents often ask whether a newborn can go in a pushchair at all, and which ones to look at. This guide uses the figures in our catalogue to show which models are listed as suitable from birth and how each one does it. It is a catalogue comparison, not medical advice: for how long a baby should spend lying flat or in a pushchair, follow the guidance from your midwife or health visitor.
What a newborn needs from a pushchair
A pushchair that a maker lists as suitable from birth gives a newborn a supported lying position rather than an upright seat. It does that in one of three ways, and the catalogue records which one each model uses.
Three ways to do it
- Carrycot. A separate lie-flat bed that clips onto the chassis. 19 models in our catalogue include one in the box, and 18 more list one as sold separately.
- Lie-flat seat. The seat itself reclines to flat, so there is no separate bed. Models like the Silver Cross Clic, Silver Cross Jet 5 and Egg Z have no carrycot but are listed as lying flat.
- Newborn insert. A padded insert that supports a newborn in the seat. One model in the catalogue is listed this way, the Bugaboo Butterfly 2.
Of the 42 models in our catalogue, 41 are listed as suitable from birth. The exception is the Bugaboo Butterfly, which is listed as suitable from 6 months.
Models suitable from birth
Weight is as recorded in the catalogue, and "Not published" means the catalogue has no figure for it. "Overnight sleep" is whether the maker approves the carrycot for overnight sleep; check the maker's own page before using any carrycot for a full night. Where a carrycot is sold separately, you need to buy it for a newborn.

Carrycot, pram or travel system
A carrycot with a chassis is often called a pram, and the same chassis takes a seat later. A travel system adds a car seat on the same chassis. We don't sell car seats, so we have not compared them. The "Car seat" column shows whether the catalogue lists the model as taking one, and the model page notes whether adaptors are needed. See our pram or pushchair guide for the difference, and the travel systems in our shop when we have stock.
If you plan to use a pushchair for travel from birth, our best travel strollers guide covers the lightest options, and the cabin-approved guide covers flying.
How long they stay in newborn mode
A carrycot or insert is for the early months only. Once your baby sits up and rolls, you move to the seat. Our age guide explains when each stage suits.
Buying second-hand for a newborn
A newborn is the case where condition matters most. Before you buy, check:
- The carrycot is in the box. On a used one, a missing carrycot or mattress is common, and a newborn needs it.
- The harness and buckles work and the straps aren't frayed.
- The brakes hold on a slope, and the fold locks without force.
- The fabrics and mattress are clean and undamaged.
- The model and year. Many models here have older and newer versions, so check which one you are buying.
Our guide to buying a second-hand pram sets out the full set of checks we use when we refurbish one. Our safety page explains how we approach it. Browse the buggies catalogue for each model's full figures, or see what we have in the shop.
Frequently asked questions
Can newborns go in a pushchair? Yes, if the model is suitable from birth and set up so the baby lies flat, either in a carrycot, a lie-flat seat or with a newborn insert. 41 of the 42 models in our catalogue are listed as suitable from birth.
What is the best pram for a newborn? It depends on your home, car and budget. Use the table to narrow down by set-up and weight, then look at the model pages. We don't rank on a single winner.
Can I put a 4 month old in a pushchair? It depends on the model, so check its recline positions and the maker's age guidance. Our age guide covers the stages.
