Second-hand travel systems: what to check and what you save

What counts as a travel system, the 19 models in our catalogue that fit, and what to check on a used or refurbished one, with weight and folded size for each.

A travel system is a pram and pushchair in one, with a car seat option, so one set covers newborn to toddler. Buying one second-hand can save money, but there are more parts to go missing than on a simple stroller. This guide lists the travel systems in our catalogue and sets out what to check before you buy a used one.

What counts as a travel system

For this guide, a travel system is a pushchair that comes with a carrycot in the box and is listed in our catalogue as taking a car seat on adaptors. It is the same rule our travel systems shop page uses, so the two lists match. We don't sell car seats, so we have not compared them: "car seat" here only means what the catalogue records about compatibility, and the model page notes whether adaptors are needed.

19 of the 42 models in our catalogue meet that rule. Weight and folded size are as recorded in the catalogue, and "Not published" means we have no confirmed figure.

Folded size is length x width x height as recorded in the catalogue. Each model's buggies page has the full spec, and the fold guides show how each one folds. For price guidance, see our value pages, which show the figures we publish for each model.

What to check on a used travel system

More pieces means more to check. Before you buy:

  • Everything in the set is there. The carrycot, its mattress, the seat unit, the chassis, the rain cover and any car seat adaptors. Adaptors and rain covers are the parts most often missing from a used set.
  • The carrycot is undamaged. Check the base, the fabric and the clips that fix it to the chassis.
  • The harness and buckles work and the straps aren't frayed.
  • The brakes hold on a slope and the fold locks without force.
  • The wheels turn freely and the tyres are in good order.
  • The model and year. Many models here have older and newer versions, so confirm which one you are buying. The table shows which are current and which are discontinued.

Our guide to buying a second-hand pram sets out the full set of checks we use when we refurbish one, and our safety page explains how we approach it.

New, second-hand or refurbished

Buying new gets you the full maker's warranty and a model that is still made. Buying second-hand privately is usually cheaper, but you check everything yourself and have little recourse if something is wrong. Buying refurbished sits between the two: the pushchair has been checked and cleaned by the seller. Our refurbished pushchairs are checked 11 ways and guaranteed for 6 months. Whichever route you take, work through the checklist above.

Where to buy and sell

Our guide to where to sell a pram compares the main routes for selling, and the pram or pushchair guide explains the difference between the types. See what we have in stock in the shop.
